The Upper School Dining Room has a projector and sound system. A laptop can connect to the projector using the Apple TV or by directly plugging in using an HDMI cable.
As of 12/17/2025, the Apple TV is temporarily out of commission. Please directly plug your laptop into the HDMI port located on the wall beneath the control panel. The HDMI cable and adapter are located in the cabinet.
Recommendations prior to the event:
- Test out the system before the event.
- Restart your laptop.
- Click the apple icon in the upper left of your laptop screen.

- Uncheck the "Reopen windows when logging in" box if checked.

Check the battery level for the microphone(s) located on the microphone's screen.
- If batteries are needed, stop by the bookstore to grab more.

Using the A/V System
DO NOT TURN OFF ANYTHING IN THE CABINET.
How to turn on the system:
- Tap the control panel screen to turn on the display.
- Type in 1886 and press Enter.
How to project:
- Click Projector On on the control panel. The screen will automatically lower.
- If the projector doesn't turn on, click the Projector On button again.
- Click on one of the following video sources on the control panel:
- Apple TV
- Connect your laptop to the Apple TV to start screen mirroring.
- HDMI Wall Plate
- Grab the HDMI cable and adapter from the "Cables - HDMI, VGA, Audio" drawer in the cabinet.
- Plug the HDMI cable into the HDMI port located on the wall beneath the control panel.
- Plug the HDMI cable/adapter into your laptop.
- Apple TV
- To toggle between mirroring your laptop screen and using it as an extended display once connected, press Command + F1 on your laptop.
How to turn on the microphone(s):
- Grab a mic from the "Microphones" drawer in the cabinet.
- Multiple mics can be used at the same time.
- Turn the mic on.
- Check the battery level.
- If new batteries are needed, stop by the bookstore to grab more.
- Look at the control panel and note which mic is showing feedback under the Volume Control section. If none are showing feedback, make sure the mic is on and speak into it and check again.
- Test the volume and adjust the associated slider as needed.
- Hold the mic close to your mouth to get the best sound quality.
- Don't hold the bottom portion of the mic when speaking. This can cause the mic to cut out because that's where the receiver is. Hold it in the middle (at least 3-4" up from the bottom).
How to route the audio:
- Each audio source can be routed to the cafeteria, Salas Commons, or both (all).
- On the control panel, click the ON/OFF to direct audio to the desired location.
- Need to play sound from your laptop while connected to the projector? Use the Video Audio volume slider to adjust accordingly.
- Turn down the Video Audio volume before testing the sound.
- If sound is being routed to the Salas Commons, there is another control panel located on the west wall out there that allows you to adjust the sound in the commons.
- Sound for the dining room can only be controlled from the control panel in the dining room.
How to turn off the system:
- Disconnect from the Apple TV/unplug the HDMI cable from your laptop.
- Please return the HDMI cable to the appropriate drawer.
- Turn the mic(s) off and return it to the appropriate drawer.
- Click Projector Off. The screen will automatically rise.
- Click Lock Touchscreen.
